Different Types of Boats to Consider for Your First Boat Purchase

Last updated 5 years ago

Are you preparing to buy your first boat? If so, it’s an important decision, and one you don’t want to regret. Consider how you want to use the boat, how many people you want to take along on outings, and the speed and performance levels that will be right for your needs and abilities. Here are three boat types that could be perfect for a first-time boat buyer like you.

Cabin Cruisers

Cabin cruisers are popular with first-time boat owners because they work well for all kinds of activities and offer exceptional comfort. Cruisers often have a kitchen, toilet, and one or more sleeping quarters below the deck. But despite what’s below the deck, cabin cruisers are not so large that they’re hard to navigate in inland waterways. Most stern drive models are 24 to 40 feet in length. Keep in mind, however, that these rudder-steered boats will require more skill to maneuver than boats with propeller drives.

Deck Boats

Deck boats are made for boaters who want to take friends out on boating adventures. The boats are designed to seat many comfortably, up to 14 passengers in larger models. Although these vessels share some similarities with pontoon boats, like high seating capacity and open deck design, deck boats have a more powerful engine and reach higher speeds. Deck boats are perfect boats for sightseeing, skiing, and having fun with friends.

Pontoon Boats

Pontoon boats are one of the most practical options for many first-time boat owners. Generally, pontoons are easier to steer and operate than other boat types and, due to their twin hauls, more stable over water. Owning one is kind of like having your own decked-out porch on the water, equipped with enough comfortable seats for friends and even creature comforts like refrigerators on-deck. Most pontoons reach comparatively lower speeds, but some models reach speeds appropriate for water skiing and other activities.
